About the Book

The U.S. National Security Strategies of 2002 and 2006 identified advancing democracy and economic development as central ingredients of an effective 21st century security strategy. After 9/11, no longer would the United States have the luxury of ignoring the vast majority of the developing world deemed "non-strategic." While motivated by perceived security threats, the U.S.-led military intervention has been justified on the grounds of bringing democracy to Iraq and the Middle East, more generally. As the U.S. presence in Iraq drags on and the human, financial, and strategic costs mount, democracy promotion has become a convenient scapegoat for critics from both the right and left. Accordingly, the role of democracy promotion in U.S. foreign policy will be a defining position for all presidential candidates in 2008.

The Democracy Advantage provides an empirically-grounded analysis of the consistently positive development track record of poor countries with democratic governments relative to other political systems. Building on the democratic peace literature, The Democracy Advantage also connects the dots of how democracy and development contribute to lower levels of intrastate conflict and popular support for extremist ideologies. This analysis, in turn, provides the foundation for a series of policy recommendations for how democracy can become a more central feature of U.S. and international engagement in the developing world. In short, The Democracy Advantage is a liberal internationalist justification for making democracy a central feature of U.S. foreign policy.
